Virginia Community College Part of Workforce Training Program

Focus on Preparing for Jobs in Green Energy Sector

U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Jim Webb announced last year that Dabney S. Lancaster Community College received stimulus package funds to prepare wind turbine service technicians for emerging “green” technology and renewable energy industries. The U.S. Department of Labor grant provides training opportunities through the Shenandoah Valley Energy Partnership, comprised of three community colleges, one university, three career and technical education centers, and the Virginia Manufacturers Association.

“This is the kind of forward-looking collaboration we need to help jump-start our economy and create next-generation jobs,” said Senator Warner.  “This investment in training for green energy represents exciting opportunities.”

“One of the largest barriers to economic growth in many communities is the shortage of a skilled workforce, and I am pleased the Shenandoah Valley will benefit from this investment,” said Senator Webb. “Proper job training and workforce development will create jobs and enable Virginia to take advantage of the growing technology and renewable energy economies.”

“We were thrilled with the award”, commented Dr. Richard Teaff, DSLCC’s president. “Our use of funds will enhance regional job training and employment; we have jumpstarted a program to train Wind Turbine Service Technicians which has enjoyed much success.  Word about the program is spreading throughout the mid-Atlantic.”

Workforce Coordinator Earl Dodrill stresses that the program’s value is due to careful selection of each course, embracing the concept of mechatronics, stating, “We include basics of mechanics, electronics, and computers to illustrate interaction among systems that results in more reliable, affordable operations.”  Graduates leave work ready.

In addition to Mechatronics, the program includes courses such as AC/DC, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, Fluid Mechanics, Wind Safety, and Troubleshooting/Repair. Online learning modules makes selected topics globally available 24/7.   www.dslcc.edu  leaving site icon
