Green Skill Development Areas of Interest
- Solar & Photovoltaic: This area of study provides an overview of Photovoltaic (PV) systems, sunshine basics, how PV works, components of a PV system, setup configuration, sizing, wiring and controls, relevant sections of NEC, zoning laws and building codes pertaining to PV systems, parameters of concern to utilities in grid connected systems, practical experiments and demonstrations of different aspects of PV, PV maintenance and trouble shooting, and actual hands-on experience in a PV lab. Instruction prepares participants for NABCEP PV Installer Certification and Certification from the Center for Basic and Applied Science in Photovoltaic Application.
- Wind Turbine Technician: Programs in this area prepare students for jobs in the renewable energy industry. Training is provided in skill sets needed for preventative maintenance and repair activities associated with turbines. The focus is on preparation to work with large, utility-scale models, but instruction is also applicable to small and medium-sized turbines. Instruction includes principles of wind energy, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), wind safety, turbine materials and electro-mechanical equipment, power delivery systems, troubleshooting and repair.
- Industrial Energy Efficiency: Students in this area are trained to recognize energy saving opportunities within an industrial organization that will lead to reductions in energy consumption, GHG emissions and cost of operations. Training involves a pre-program assessment and online courses. Training prepares the participant for credentialing as a Certified Industrial Energy Auditor (CIEA). Targeted market includes maintenance personnel, facility management, and boiler or incinerator operators at industrial facilities, large healthcare campuses and universities.
- Advanced Green Manufacturing: A five-course online undergraduate certificate program in Engineering/Manufacturing designed to develop the skills necessary to understand and shape contemporary manufacturing operations. Program can be completed in as little as 12 months.
- CFC (Chlorofluorocarbons) Certification: This training program is an approved EPA course on R-12 recovery and recycling, and includes a written exam. CFC certification is required to work on all A/C systems. Certification materials address the topics of ozone depletion, Clean Air Act and Montreal Protocol, EPA section 608 regulations, substitute refrigerants and oils, recovery techniques, dehydration evacuation, safety, and shipping.
- Green Construction: These programs are designed to teach individuals in the building, remodeling or trade industry the principles they must know to make buildings perform more efficiently. The course is designed to help students prepare for Building Performance Institute (BPI) and Green Advantage certifications.
- Sustainability & Green Building: This program builds a strong basic technical understanding of sustainability and green technology concepts, establishes a common sense financial analysis as related to green technologies and sustainability, and develops a skill set for conducting energy and sustainability audits. This is a program with college credit, which begins with a Career Studies Certificate (CSC), leading to an AAS degree in General Engineering Technology.
- Commercial & Residential Assessment: Class instruction includes how to evaluate the energy performance and comfort of a house through comprehensive, whole house diagnostic procedures. Training prepares participants for certification as a Home Energy Rater and Diagnostic Home Energy Professional.
