Paying for Training and Credentializing

Tuition and fees for training and credentialing vary by program and training provider, and you have several options for paying those costs.

Scholarships, Combining Funds: Full or partial scholarships are available through SVEP for qualified, eligible applicants. You are encouraged to work through community college financial aid representatives to investigate additional funding resources that may be used together with SVEP scholarship funds, or may be used to offset the cost of additional expenses.

Self- or Employer-funding: You may also choose to pay for training programs yourself, or you may be able to have your training funded by your employer, depending on your employer’s education and training benefits.

Help for Unemployed or Dislocated Workers: If you are unemployed or a dislocated worker, your SVEP Participant Employment Specialist will be able to help you with full scholarship assistance. You are also encouraged to work with a representative from one of the five One-Stop Centers you are leaving this site icon within the grant service region to see if you are eligible for additional Workforce Investment Act (WIA) funds. A SVEP participant may receive services from both WIA and SVEP (this is called dual enrollment).

Funding Guidelines

  • The SVEP scholarship award period began July 2010 and will end with spring 2013 registration (January 2013), or will end when funds allocated for scholarships have been depleted. SVEP scholarship funding may not be available for the completion of all coursework for all programs. Every effort will be made to work with participants so funding can be leveraged and participants can complete programs as outlined in their Individual Training Plans.
  • Scholarships are available through grant-contracted education and training partners for students seeking enrollment in SVEP-identified and -approved training programs. All approved programs successfully end with the participant earning at least one credential, and a copy is retained in the participant’s file as proof of credentialing.
  • Scholarships will fund the full or partial cost of program tuition and some fees. SVEP scholarship funds will not fund textbooks, supplies and other course costs. Individuals may receive financial assistance from other sources (financial aid, employers, etc.) to offset other course-related costs such as books, supplies and equipment.
  • Students are eligible for more than one course scholarship each semester, so an eligible applicant may enroll in two or more classes per semester using grant funds. The student must successfully complete each class or program to receive additional scholarships. If the course or program is not successfully completed the recipient may be responsible for repayment to the grantee. Concessions will be made for dislocated and unemployed workers.
  • Scholarship funding will be used to pay for a class one time. If a class is repeated, scholarship funding may not be applied for tuition to the same class. Scholarship funds may be used for credential testing one time. If an exam needs to be repeated, grant funds will not pay for a retest. Concessions will be made for dislocated and unemployed workers.
  • Grant funds may be used for tuition and fees for the completion of up to three developmental courses so the applicant may begin a grant-approved program. Successful course completion of each developmental course is required to receive program funding.
